Preparing for an exhibition

I’m in the early stages of preparing an exhibition to go into the Weston Gallery during the autumn. It will be on the broad theme of how children were taught reading, writing and arithmetic.

It will draw much of its material from the Briggs Collection of Educational Literature, which focuses mainly on the 18th and 19th centuries, but we hope to include some manuscript and archive material from other collections as well.

At present I have the enjoyable task of looking through the collections for suitable items, especially those with visual impact and colour.  Although this work takes a lot of staff time, it’s a great way to get to know the collections really well.
